This workshop will discuss the use of stone lanterns in Japanese Gardens as well as hand shaped stone mills used for matcha making. Mr. Saida will demonstrate and introduce his hand hewn stone tea mill. Guests will use the resulting fresh matcha to drink a cup of tea as well as eat a traditional Japanese sweet.

  • Introduction from Master Saida on the ancient art of stone carving in Japan.
  • Experience, Matcha (green tea) ground by Master Saida’s stone mill in the Garden with a fresh cup of hand milled matcha and Japanese sweets
  • Q&A session with Master Saida

Taka Saida: A fifth generation Stone Smith and Artist, whose family has been engaged in stone processing and sculpture in Kyoto, Japan since its establishment in 1902. The method of stone grinding tea has carried on in Japan from the 12th century. Tencha (Green tea leaves) are ground slowly and into a fine powder.
